★★★★★

“Dr. Shane is a gentle, kind person with a sense of humor and just a great personality. Add to that she is an outstanding doctor. She did an outstanding job on my surgery as well as my routine care. I think so much of her I moved 2 hours away but kept her as a doctor. I owe my eyesight to her. I highly recommend her.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about seeing Dr. Shane in Venice.

Don’t see your question? Call us at 941-202-1900 and our team will help.

A retina specialist is an ophthalmologist with extra training in diseases of the retina and the vitreous, the gel that fills the back of the eye. The retina is the thin layer of tissue that senses light and sends images to the brain.

Dr. Shane treats conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears and detachments, macular holes, macular pucker, and blocked retinal blood vessels. Many patients are sent to her by their optometrist or general ophthalmologist when a problem in the back of the eye needs a specialist.

Many patients can schedule directly by calling 941-202-1900. Some insurance plans ask for a referral from your primary care doctor or eye doctor first. Our front desk can help you check what your plan requires.

If your eye doctor has already found a problem, ask them to send your records and imaging to our office. That helps Dr. Shane prepare for your visit.

We start by checking your vision and eye pressure. Most first visits include dilating drops, which widen the pupil so Dr. Shane can see the entire retina. We also take imaging such as an OCT scan.

Dr. Shane then examines your eyes, reviews the images with you, and explains what she finds. If you need treatment, she will walk you through your options. Dilation and imaging take time, so plan for a longer first visit.

Dilation blurs vision for several hours. Most patients are comfortable driving after dilation. We welcome you to bring a driver if you have any concern.

Yes. Dr. Shane is a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon and is credentialed at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Venice and Sarasota. She performs operations such as vitrectomy, scleral buckle, and membrane peel.

Office procedures such as eye injections, laser, and pneumatic retinopexy take place in Venice. Operations take place in an operating room, and your follow-up visits are at our Venice office.

Treatment depends on the type and stage. Wet macular degeneration is usually treated with eye injections that stop leaking blood vessels. Some patients may be candidates for the Susvimo implant, which delivers medicine over several months.

For intermediate dry macular degeneration, options include AREDS2 vitamins and Valeda light therapy. For geographic atrophy, the advanced form of dry macular degeneration, Syfovre and Izervay injections can slow the disease. Dr. Shane will recommend the approach that fits your eyes.

Venice Retina works as part of Shane Retina, the retina practice Dr. Thomas Shane founded in Sarasota. Dr. Anita Shane founded Venice Retina and practices there.

This connection gives Venice patients access to a larger team of retina specialists, two more offices in Sarasota, and a physician on call around the clock.

Call Venice Retina at 941-202-1900, or send a request through our contact page and our team will call you back. New patient forms are available on our Forms and Insurance page.

If you have sudden flashes, new floaters, or a shadow over your vision, tell our team when you call so we can see you as soon as possible.

Dr Shane and her staff are very caring and knowledgeable. The appointments run pretty much on time, and none of the three hour wait like Center for Sight. She takes the time to explain procedures, what is involved, what to expect, and when she is suggesting them.

I can’t say enough about Dr. Anita Shane! I first saw her while in Florida after noticing a flashing light in the corner of my eye, and I was diagnosed with PVD in February 2025. At my follow-up a year later, I mentioned a bad headache, neck ache, and jaw pain I’d been having. She wasted no time sending me for lab work, called that night with the results, and immediately referred me to specialists. Dr. Shane and her office staff are the best — thank you for saving my eyesight, and possibly my life!
