Eye Injections and Valeda Light Therapy in Venice, Florida

Kayla Fischer is a physician assistant at Venice Retina. She gives eye injections and Valeda light therapy to patients from Venice, North Port, Englewood, and Nokomis who need regular retina care.

Meet Kayla Fischer

Patients with macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease often need treatment every one to three months, sometimes for years. Kayla’s goal at Venice Retina is to make each of those visits calm and efficient, so coming back for the next one never feels like a burden.

Kayla came to this work through retina care itself. In college she imaged patients’ retinas at a retina practice in Tallahassee. She then trained as a physician assistant, with a clinical rotation in retinal surgery and ocular oncology (the care of eye tumors).

In Venice, Kayla works with Dr. Anita Shane. Your physician sets the treatment plan, and Kayla carries it out visit by visit. She also sees patients at Shane Retina’s South Tamiami Trail office in Sarasota.

  • NCCPA-certified physician assistant (PA‑C)

  • Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies, South College

  • Clinical rotation in vitreoretinal ophthalmology and ocular oncology

  • Former ophthalmic technician at a Tallahassee retina practice

Treatments Kayla provides: eye injections and Valeda light therapy. Patients who need both can see the same provider for each.

Making Each Visit Easier

Eye injections and Valeda light therapy both work best when patients return on schedule. We set up every visit so it is easy to keep, with as little disruption to your day as we can manage.

  • You choose how your eye is numbed. Drops, a gel that numbs for longer, or a small anesthetic injection for patients who need more.

  • Notes that carry forward. Kayla records what worked for you, so your next visit follows your preferences.

  • A call after your injection. Our team follows up by phone to see how your eye feels.

  • Prompt attention. Our clinical team sees you promptly when you arrive, without a long wait.

  • Treatment close to home. Two offices, one in Venice and one in South Sarasota.

Treatments With Kayla

Both treatments take place right in our Venice office.

Problems After an Injection? Call Right Away.

Problems after an eye injection are rare, but they need quick care. Do not wait to see if it clears up on its own. A physician is on call 24 hours a day.

Call us if you notice:

  • Eye pain that gets worse instead of better

  • Redness that spreads or deepens

  • New sensitivity to light

  • Vision that drops in the days after treatment

  • A curtain or shadow over your vision, or a sudden burst of new floaters or flashes

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about eye injections and Valeda light therapy with Kayla.

Don’t see your question? Call us at 941-202-1900 and our team will help.

Most patients say the injection is easier than they expected. Kayla numbs the eye first. You can choose numbing drops, a gel that lasts longer, or a small anesthetic injection under the eye’s surface if you need more. During the injection, most people feel only brief pressure.

Afterward, the eye can feel scratchy for the rest of the day. This comes mostly from the cleansing solution used to prevent infection. Artificial tears help at home. Tell us at check-in if you are anxious, and Kayla will explain each step before she does it.

Plan on more time than the injection itself. A typical visit includes a vision check and an OCT scan of the retina, and the numbing medicine needs a few minutes to work. The OCT scan shows whether the retina is dry or still holds fluid, which helps guide whether you are treated that day and when you come back.

Some visits also include a dilated exam. Our team can tell you ahead of time what your visit will include, so you can plan your day.

The medicine in most eye injections wears off over several weeks. As it does, leaky blood vessels can become active again. Regular injections keep that activity in check.

Many patients come in every one to three months, often for years, and the benefit depends on keeping those appointments. Putting off injections gives the disease a chance to damage the macula, the center of the retina used for reading and recognizing faces.

You sit and look into the Valeda device while it shines gentle red and near-infrared light into your eye. Each session takes about 20 minutes, is painless, and requires no recovery time.

A full course is nine sessions over three to five weeks. Kayla runs these sessions in Venice, so patients from North Port and Englewood can finish the course without a long drive.

Most patients are comfortable driving after an injection. We welcome you to bring a driver if you have any concern. Valeda sessions do not require dilation, and most patients return to their normal day right after.

If your visit includes a dilated exam, your vision may stay blurry for several hours, so plan to bring a driver on those days.

Sometimes. Macular degeneration often affects each eye differently. One eye may have the wet form, which is treated with injections, while the other has the dry form. In that case your physician may recommend injections for one eye and consider Valeda for the other.

Because Kayla provides both treatments, you can see the same provider for each. Our front desk will help you line up both schedules.

Your physician does. In Venice, that is Dr. Anita Shane. Kayla carries out the plan visit by visit, so your care stays consistent from one appointment to the next.

Dr. Shane impressed me with her ability to explain throughly and simply my issue so that I could understand. The simple treatment is working. She spent enough time to answer my questions. Everyone in the office seemed very professional, kind, and knowledgeable.
I'll highly recommend Dr. Shane! I am new to the area and initially liked Dr. Shane's experience at Rice University in bi-engineering in Houston, at Baylor Medical, and even more so her experience at Bascom Palmer Eye Institue in Miami. Her explanation of my eye conditions was very clear and undestandable. And she stayed to answer my several other questions, very helpful. Her staff was outstanding. Technical staff Emma and Hanna were both courteous and efficient in getting my preliminary tests done. And the front desk staff were courteous and helpful. In general a great experience for me and my eyes! Thanks Venice Retina! 04.13.26 Had my annual review today and Dr. Share and staff again did an outstanind job.. Sami the vision tech did a good job on my pre-exam preparation and Visual Field Test. Dr. Anita found a couple of items that needed review and referred me to a specialist for that next step. I apprecoiate all her effort in working to have me see the best possible. Thank you all at Venice Retina!
