What is a Retina Specialist?
Retina specialists are ophthalmologists (eye doctors) with a specialty in the vitreous body of the eye and the retina. In order to become a retina specialist, one must commit to extensive training. After receiving a license as a medical doctor, it is not uncommon to spend an additional 4 years specializing in ophthalmology, followed by an additional 2 years of vitreoretinal training.
A retina specialist routinely performs evaluations & examinations of the eye and retina in order to diagnose and treat conditions, ranging from age-related macular degeneration to hereditary diseases to cancer of the eye. Sometimes treatment involves surgery. Retina specialists use highly specialized tools to work in extremely tiny areas in and around the eye.
Given the importance of sight for humans, retina specialists use modern technology to extend the well being and quality of life of their patients far beyond what was possible just a few decades ago.
